I first met Fred when I was on my way home from a night out. He was friends with my brother for a while, and when I came home, the guys were having poker night. I was briefly introduced to him and the next day my brother told me that Fred was very interested in spending time with me. My first thought was that he was too short for me, being that I only saw him sitting down. Little did I know he was 6’5”! So, my brother set us up and we went on our first date.
Fred was endearingly shy and nervous when we first started dating. After a short while, I started to fall in love with his good heart and caring nature. He was the last of a dying breed of chivalrous gentleman. I would come out of work or school at the time to find roses left on the windshield of my car, or a love note left for me. He sure knew how to woo a lady, and little by little, I could see our future unfolding before us. We started dating officially in December of 2004.
We vacationed a lot, tried new restaurants, went new places, and built up a strong network of friends together. We spent our first of many Valentine’s days at Stroudsmoor Country Inn. I used to vacation at Stroudsmoor every summer when I was a growing up, so it was always a very special place for me. We quickly became each other’s best friends, and most importantly, we became a family. We moved in together a couple of years later, and there was nothing more satisfying to us than being the only people left when our day was done. We had a nice flow to our lives, and I made a home for him the best way I knew how. He taught me about stability and made me feel safe, and I brought him out of his shell and introduced him to new things. We knew this was something we both wanted to hold on to, because we made perfect sense. And absolutely nothing was going to stand in our way!
We were dating for 7 years, when on Valentine’s Day 2011, Fred took me to Stroudsmoor overnight. I remember at dinner, how distracted he had seemed. I had no idea at the time that he was planning a surprise for me! When we got back to our cottage, there were roses everywhere and music playing softly. And it was then that he asked me to be his wife. I said yes, of course, because I couldn’t imagine ever loving anyone else.
Our family and friends could not have been happier for us! Being together for 7 years, our respective families loved us together, and everyone was so excited to celebrate. We decided, of course, to get married at Stroudsmoor. I wouldn’t have had it any other way. The place means so much to us, and we have celebrated so many other milestones there. It was a perfect fit.
We were married on September 14, 2012 in front of all the people we love. To be able to stand up in front of everyone and proclaim our love and promise to each other was magical. The grounds, the staff, the food, the decorations…everything Stroudsmoor touches is charming and elegant.
As for Fred and I, we are as excited about our future today as we were 8 years ago. He is still the shy, thoughtful boy I met all those years ago, and I am still the only girl he ever notices. And when it rains, he takes out his umbrella big enough for two, and keeps me safe and warm.
